Spot Light Pics

People want to make their home or office gardens more appealing, especially during nighttime. And one way to do that is by installing garden spot lights. These types of spot-lights make gardens less dark and dull, while making everyone feel more relaxed and comfortable.

Garden spotlights work because they enhance the overall ambience of your garden. Gardens tend to look really drab and boring, especially during nighttime. Therefore, by installing this kind of outdoor light, you can create a stunning lighting effect in your garden, which you can also use to highlight its focal points.

For gardens, there are many different types of spotlights available. They come in different colors and designs, and they have other special uses aside from illuminating your property. For example, one type of garden light uses solar power to store energy in its batteries, so you won’t be using your main power source once you flick it on. This type of garden spot light can really help you cope with the ever-increasing electricity bills.

There is another type of garden light that doesn’t need any wires, and runs on its own battery. These types of spot lights are very convenient, especially if you constantly transfer your spotlights all around the garden. In addition, like solar-powered spot-lights, stand-alone spot-lights also helps lower electricity bills.

When buying your first set of these lights, you have to remember three things: value, durability, and aesthetic quality.

Value

How much are you willing to spend for your spotlight? Spot lights don’t come cheap, therefore, it would be a good idea if you do a price comparison on the different models and brands available to help you find a good deal. Also,, make sure that you know how many spotlights you need to avoid excessive lighting which, in turn, will make increase your energy consumption.

Durability

Another thing to check before you buy your set of spot lights is its durability. Are your lights from a trusted brand? You may not be sure about the quality of your lights if you got them too cheaply. To ascertain that you’ll acquire quality garden spot lights, be sure to only purchase from established light manufacturers.

Aesthetic Quality

Finally, you should also consider if your lights are appropriate to your garden or not. Basically, the addition of spotlights should make your garden look more pleasing. Be sure that you know the appropriate color hues and brightness that will blend well with your garden theme.

Light Shades Pics

There is hardly any more confusion in the lighting industry than how to select a replacement glass shade for a torchiere lamp.

First let us define a torchiere lamp. A torchiere lamp is any table or floor lamp whose light is directed upward by means of a glass, metal, stone, plastic or other type of reflector. These lamps take many forms and are made of many materials but most commonly made as floor lamps.

The word “Torchiere” is derived from the French word “Torche” torch.

These popular lamps provide excellent area lighting because they bounce light off the ceiling and diffuse it throughout a large area of the room.

There are four (4) basic types of torchiere glass.

1) Dish type torchiere glass (most common) is a dish or bowl shape glass shade with a 1 5/8″ wide center hole that simply slips down over the electrical socket and rests upon a metal or plastic holder. There is a threaded ring which screws down over the electrical socket to hold the glass in place. This type torchiere glass is usually frosted white, beige or plain white.

2) Reflector waffle pattern opal white torchiere glass is a cone shape glass shade available in two (2) common sizes: 2.75″ fitter that is 10″ wide and the other is a 2.25″ fitter that is 8″ wide. This torchiere glass usually has a waffle type pattern pressed into the surface of the glass although there are some with no pattern in the glass. These torchiere glass shades were very popular in the 1920′s and 1930′s and were found on many 6 way floor lamps that had 3 arm lights plus a center light. They are also available on some modern lamps as well as some floor lamps without arms. Many of these lamps are designed for a fabric lamp shade to rest upon the reflector glass. This arrangement not only provides excellent area lighting but also excellent reading light.

3) Long neck torchiere glass is a larger glass, usually around 13-16″ wide with a long neck that fits down inside a 2.75 – 3″” wide holder. This glass shade has the appearance of a very wide funnel with neck. These are the most expensive type of torchiere glass shades.

4) Stiffel replacement torchiere glass is made specifically to fit lamps from this lamp maker.

If you need further help selecting the correct torchiere glass for your lamp, be sure to contact a professional full service lamp company with lots of experience with torchiere lamps.

Good luck on all your lighting projects.

Room Lighting Pics

Lighting is an essential aspect when it comes to decorating a home and it is no less important in a main room like the dining room so don’t leave this out when deciding on a design. There are a number of options to choose from in this room in the house just like other rooms.

This room is in need of good lighting because of the function that it plays in the home. It is often used for entertaining and people enjoy eating and talking in a well lit room so it makes this a critical aspect.

Let’s look at a few ideas that we can implement when it comes to lighting a dining room and how to achieve the best looks in that room. It is important to get it right the first time so that you don’t have to pay a lot to undo what was done.

You will want to focus on allowing people to have an enjoyable eating experience so you have to get the right balance of light so that it is not too dark or too bright. This way people can eat and just sit and chat without any inconveniences.

An important factor to consider is the placement and size of the table as this is usually the center of focus when it comes to a dining room. So place the lights in a fashion that the table will be usable but again, not too dark, and not too light.

Chandeliers are a great way to provide light to a room and they also create a luxurious look at the same time. They can be hung right above the table and while they cost a lot it might be worth it if you have the money to spend.

A pendant is also a good option and whereas a chandelier has many lights, a pendant generally has one and is a less expensive way to light up the dining room. It is easy to pick one out from the many that are available.

Wall sconces, track lighting, and recessed lighting are also potential options for a dining room but not always recommended if you want to get a really nice look. They are great in other rooms but it is nice to have something eye opening.

So enjoy making the choices of dining room lighting because when you pick one out it will make all the difference. Enjoy the new dining room lighting.

Architectural Lighting Pics

The growing desire for new home construction and home renovations have influenced fixture manufacturers to design more exciting and provocative architectural lighting fixtures. Larger homes require more architectural lighting – or luminaries that are permanently installed and planned for in the lighting or wiring plan of a home. Lighting trends can change slowly – the fixture bought today will last in style and durability for 5 to 10 years or longer. However, manufacturers continuously respond to consumer s’ desire for color and novel materials. Recent trends point to the demand for oversized foyer pieces for dramatic, grand entryways, mini-chandeliers for powder rooms, bedrooms, hallways, and other small spaces, and colourful pendants for kitchen applications. I will give my two cents on how to choosing chandeliers, pendants, and ceiling flush mounts and semi-flush mounts for different parts of the house.

The best piece of advice in choosing a dining room table chandelier is to choose a chandelier that has a diameter equivalent to half the width of the table. So let’s say that your table has a width of 60 inches, you would need a chandelier that has a 30-inch diameter. If you have a table that is longer than usual it might be a challenge for you to find the right chandelier. One solution is to get a fixture that has an oval shape (as opposed to being round) – this way more of the dining space will be lit up. You can put chandeliers in other places than just the dining room. Depending on a room’s size and design, it can be an appropriate place to hang a chandelier. Mini chandeliers are perfect for bathrooms or bedrooms, depending on your taste. Foyers are also a very common place to put chandeliers. The larger the foyer, the larger the chandelier will need to be. Remember that installation may be a challenge.

Ceiling mounts are an obvious way to provide general lighting. They can be installed as flush mounts (attached to the ceiling directly) or semi-flush (hang slightly lower from the ceiling than flush mounts). The difference in lighting effect from using a semi-flush entraps the light more and will make it reflect onto the ceiling. If well placed, flush mounts can become the central fixture in a room.

When choosing a pendant, the most important point to consider is that the fixture light up the room according to the diameter of its shade. If all you want is to light up a small table or corner of a room, then all you need is a single pendant downlight.

Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs Pics

In an effort to cut energy costs and “go green,” many countries, including the United States, are either considering phasing out incandescent light bulbs or have already passed laws to ban them. As standard light bulbs go the way of the dinosaurs, consumers are left with just two viable options, LED light bulbs and compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs).

The push has been on for CFLs for the past several years, and in turn, they’ve received a lot of press, both positive and negative. But not much has been said about LED light bulbs. And so the question begs to be answered: What are LED light bulbs and are they a good alternative to CFLs?

While most people aren’t aware of it, LED (light emitting diode) technology has actually been around for quite a while. LEDs are basically tiny light bulbs about the size of a matchstick head that fit into an electrical circuit. That pinpoint light which indicates your dishwasher is running, for example, is a LED light. LED lights are used to form the numbers on digital clocks and are used as instrument panel lighting in vehicles, boats, and aircraft. Many traffic lights are now composed of clusters of LEDs.

Because LEDs are extremely energy efficient, can tolerate temperature variances and turbulence – all while lasting a long time – the quest began in an effort to create light bulbs by clustering numerous LED’s together. And it’s worked. LED light bulbs are now being produced that boast exceptional energy efficiency. A 7-watt LED light bulb, for example, can now replace a 75-watt incandescent bulb. As you can guess, the potential savings in energy costs and greenhouse gasses is enormous.

With claims that they can last up to 15 years and use 90% less energy than the traditional bulb, LED light bulbs seem to be a no-brainer at first glance. But problems are prominent and LED light bulbs currently come up short. Let’s take a look at why:

LED light bulbs are expensive. Understandably, most people balk at spending $35.00 to $125.00 for just one light bulb, even when it results in a notable reduction in energy bills. Considering most homes have 30-plus light bulbs and businesses have significantly more, switching to LEDs is simply not an affordable option.

LED light bulbs aren’t bright enough. While standard bulbs and CFLs illuminate light in all directions, the light from LED light bulbs is directed or focused, like a spotlight. While this works well for situations such as reading, work areas, and accent lighting, it results in unsatisfactory illumination for general lighting needs.

Not all LED light bulbs are created equal. Many of the less expensive LED light bulbs produced use poor quality LED’s that burn out prematurely due to manufacturing issues.

Their light output quickly degrades. Unlike incandescent bulbs, which release their heat, LEDs contain their heat, which causes their light quality to degrade. Even though heat syncs are added to redirect the heat to a circuit board, issues with temperature overload are still frequent. Tests have shown a loss of 50% of light output in 6 months.

Due to their brightness, stability and attractive pricing (not much more than incandescent bulbs) CFL’s are currently the better choice for most homes and businesses. However, if you decide to take LEDs for a test drive, here are some tips:

Start out by trying just one LED light bulb.
Do your homework. Take time research and read consumer feedback and reviews. Weigh the pros and the cons.
Pay careful attention to warranties and guarantees from both the manufacturer and the store you buy from.
Buy quality. Phillips Color Kinetics and Permlight are good brands that currently produce high quality LEDs.
Beware of the less expensive LED light bulbs as they are often problematic.

As LED technology improves and prices drop, LED light bulbs will be worth taking a second look at in the future. But for now, CFLs are clearly the better overall choice.

Lighting Ideas Pics

Outdoor LED lighting is quite popular during the Christmas season; however, it is becoming more popular throughout the year as well. The advantage of using these lights is that they are quite durable and are not that easy to break like the old glass lights our parents used to hang outdoors. LED stands for light-emitting diode. They use approximately ninety-five percent less energy than older styles of bulbs. These types of lights also last up to ten times longer.

This is also used in outdoor message signs, scoreboards and warning lights. They come in several different shapes, configurations and colors such as green, blue and red. These lights have been around for quite some time and have mainly been used as indicator lighting in various pieces of technology. Due to their popularity and overall energy efficiency, you can now find them in various residential and commercial lighting situations.

The price of outdoor LED lighting will continue to drop as the public becomes more and more aware of this technology. A sixty-watt incandescent bulb will last approximately one thousand hours where a two-watt LED bulb will last sixty thousand hours. You can see the huge difference in efficiency quite easily.

Due to the high costs of electricity, these days’ people would be wise to convert their exterior illumination to it. Many homeowners like to leave a light on outside all night so these people should notice a considerable reduction in their electricity usage. Environmentally conscious people will likely have already changed their lighting methods by now.

Another advantage of outdoor LED lighting is that the bulbs run a lot cooler that regular lighting. They do not produce heat energy, which means they are safe to the touch in case small children or pets encounter them. A light that does not produce heat is ideal for landscaping and near plants as well. These types of lights are manufactured as a solid unit so there is no glass or filament that could potentially break. They are resistant to shock, vibration and impact, which means they are much more durable than a glass bulb.

Before you purchase outdoor lighting for the coming barbeque season, consider outdoor LED lighting as an alternative to standard bulbs. You will be doing your pocketbook and the environment a big favor.

Lighting Installation Pics

People give a lot of thought to really utilizing their closet space by good organization and smart space-saving design. What they forget is the need to provide closet lighting as well. Unfortunately, you cannot keep your storage area neat and tidy if you cannot see your way around inside. So proper lighting is going to be of extreme importance.

Natural Light May Not Be An Option

The good news is that there are lots of options when it comes to making sure that your closets have some illumination, but the one source that you usually can not count on in this area is natural light. The reason is that a window can take up a lot of space and might not even be possible to install.

Fluorescent is the Code-Compliant Solution

Safety is most important and you have to make sure not to create any fire hazards in your closet. So really the only option is fluorescent lighting – the only code compliant solution.

You can hire out this job out if that option fits in your budget. But this can also be a do-it-yourself project for someone who is a handy person. The actual directions for each lighting system may vary but it is important to know a few things before you even attempt to begin such a project yourself.

Steps in Doing it Yourself

First you have to identify which source of power you will be able to pull power from inside the closet. You have to make sure that before you start working on any electrical projects that you turn off the main power source first. You will want to install this fluorescent light between studs and the same goes for placement of the light switch itself.

Keep the Light Away from any Insulation

You will need to have access to your attic in order to complete this job to fasten the lighting mount, making sure that you keep the it away from any insulation so that it will not become a fire hazard. Another important rule of thumb is not to cross wires – keep black with black and white with white. If you find that you have a confusing wiring system then you should abort the operation immediately and call an electrician. It is always better to be safe than sorry.

Lighting that Runs on Batteries

Now if you are not very electrically-inclined then you might want to consider another option for closet lighting. There are some very inexpensive lighting systems that do not have to be connected to the electricity grid but rather run on batteries. They are small, energy efficient, lightweight and inexpensive. This system requires absolutely no wiring and it is a guarantee that you will not have to end up calling an electrician.

They are just simple light bars that attach under your cabinet or to the ceiling of your closet. These systems generally run on four AA batteries. These kits include two very bright Krypton bulbs that are situated in swivel pockets, which makes it very easy to place the light directly where you need it.

Usually, there will also be two different settings on these lights such as high and low. It is just really all a matter of how much time and money you are willing to invest on a closet lighting system and your needs.
