Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs

The best lighting choice you can make for the plants in your garden is choosing to use compact fluorescent light bulbs. There are many reasons why they are best, and I will do my best to explain those reasons for you here. I’ve used them in my home for over five years, and have never been let down.

Planting a garden outside comes with many risks (animals, weather, etc). I like to avoid these risks by planting indoor gardens. A great thing about compact fluorescent light bulbs is that you don’t need to worry about placing your plants where the sun can reach them, because the CFLs will do the sun’s work. Full spectrum daylight CFLs will have your plants thinking they’re basking in sunlight all day, even if they’re in a windowless basement.

Full spectrum daylight CFLs have a color temperature of 6500K (6500 degrees Kelvin), which lighting manufacturers agree is the approximate color temperature of the sun at high noon. This light combined with full spectrum technology allows compact fluorescent light bulbs to emulate the sun, allowing plants to grow anywhere you like. CFLs create very little heat as well, so you don’t have to worry about harming any of your plants.

The cost of CFLs for your garden will usually end up lower than the cost of the plants, vases, pots, etc. Daylight and full spectrum compact fluorescents are generally more expensive than their standard counterparts, but not so much that they are out of reach. Check around for the best prices, but stay with name brands like Sylvania, Westinghouse, Litetronics, etc. Bulbs without brands could come from anywhere and have any number of defects or deficiencies.
